CORFU is one of the most visually exciting regions of Greece with its variety of natural beauty green woodlands, wild pine-covered mountains, lakes, cultivated fields and of course, miles of golden beaches. The island enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and refreshing summers.
Without doubt Corfu town is the jewel in the Ionian crown and is really one of the most beautiful and fascinating places in the Greek islands. Its certainly busy - 40,000 people live here before the tourists even arrive - but its well worth a visit to check out the way different cultures have left their influences over the centuries.
Take a stroll through the extraordinary paved alleyways and explore the maze of streets and squares to get a real feel for the place and its complex history. The Old Fortress, which stands on a twin-peaked headland on the eastern side, was started by the Byzantines in the 6th century. The Venetians took over from 1386 to 1797 stamping their architectural mark on Corfu town with multi-storeyed buildings and characteristically narrow streets (kandounia) and the French made a stunning contribution by building The Liston, an elegant arcade, around the end of the 18th century. Brimming with excellent shopping, quality restaurants and plenty of bars, Corfu town has something to offer everyone. You can get more info about Corfu town in our Sights page.
Kavos is the place to come if you really want to party. Loud and lively fun are the resorts specialty and at night the air seems to throb to the sound of disco and house music whilst neon signs flash everywhere you look. The bars here are vibrant, noisy and brash and are open until the early hours and beyond. The emphasis is on having a great time. By day, Kavos is a different, much quieter place - especially in the morning before those whove spent the small hours living it up re-emerge.
The sandy beach is a delightful 2km long so theres plenty of room to try your hand at water sports such as diving or just sun-bathe in comfort and regain some energy for another long night of partying ahead.
